Everything you need to know before starting SAO: Hollow Realization. Weapon choice, combat basics, party system, and early mistakes to avoid based on a full playthrough.

Welcome to Ainground Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization takes place in Ainground, a restored version of Aincrad within a new VRMMO. Unlike the death game from the original story, this is a legitimate game world -- but that does not mean it is easy. You play as Kirito (or your created character) who receives a mysterious message leading you to meet Premiere, an amnesiac NPC girl who is central to the entire story. The game throws a lot of systems at you within the first hour: character creation, weapon selection, skill trees, party management, a complex combat system, an entire town to explore, and then open fields full of enemies. This guide covers what actually matters when you are just starting out.

Starting Weapon Choice During character creation you select your starting weapon. You CAN switch weapons later at any blacksmith, but your first choice determines your early game experience and which skill tree you start investing in. • One-Handed Sword (1HS) -- The best beginner weapon. Balanced damage, speed, and defense. This is the most forgiving weapon to learn with, and it is the only weapon that unlocks Dual Blades later in the game. I recommend this for first-time players. • Rapier -- Asuna's signature weapon. Extremely fast thrusting attacks with high critical hit rate, but very short range. You need precise positioning to make the most of it. • Two-Handed Sword (2HS) -- Slow, heavy hits that deal massive stagger damage. Great at launching enemies, but the long recovery after attacks means you get punished hard if you miss. • Bow -- Sinon's weapon. Ranged damage with charged shots and weak point bonuses. Safest weapon for new players who prefer to stay back, though you still need to manage SP carefully. • Mace -- Lisbeth's weapon. The best weapon for stunning enemies and tanking hits. High stagger value makes it excellent in parties, though solo damage is lower. • Dagger -- Silica's weapon. Fastest attack speed in the game, excellent dodge cancels, and applies status ailments. Steeper learning curve due to short range and positional requirements. • Spear -- Longest melee reach with wide sweeping attacks good for crowd control. A solid middle-ground choice.

Player Tip: Start with One-Handed Sword. It teaches you the fundamentals of timing, spacing, and skill chaining without being overly punishing. You can always switch later, and 1HS proficiency carries over toward unlocking Dual Blades.

Combat Fundamentals You Must Learn There are four mechanics that come up in virtually every fight. Master these early and the entire game becomes manageable. Ignore them and even trash mobs will give you trouble. • Perfect Guard -- Press your guard button the moment an enemy attack is about to connect. If timed correctly, you take zero damage and the enemy is briefly staggered, leaving them open for counterattack. This is the single most important defensive skill in the game. Practice on boars outside town until you can do it consistently. • Switch -- When you or an ally staggers or launches an enemy, a blue Switch marker appears over an ally's head. Pressing the Switch button at that moment triggers a follow-up attack from your ally while giving you brief invincibility frames and SP recovery. This is your highest-damage tool in group combat. • Risk System -- As you attack enemies continuously, a Risk gauge builds above their HP bar. Higher Risk means the enemy takes more damage, but also deals more damage to you. On bosses, keep an eye on this -- if Risk gets too high, back off and let it reset rather than risking a one-shot. • Sword Skill Connect (SSC) -- You can chain sword skills together by inputting the next skill near the end of your current skill's animation. Successful chains build combo multipliers that dramatically increase damage. Start with 2-skill chains and work up from there.

What to Do in the First Hour • Complete the character creation and opening dialogue with Premiere. Do not skip conversations -- the dialogue choices you make affect affinity with NPCs, which directly improves their combat performance when they are in your party. • After gaining control in town, open the menu and go to the Skills section. Manually equip your sword skills and battle skills to your skill palette. The game does NOT auto-equip these, and if you skip this step you will only have basic attacks in your first fight. • Visit the item shop and buy at least 10 HP potions. Also grab a few SP potions if you can afford them. • Find the blue teleport crystal in the center of town and activate it by walking up to it. This becomes your first fast travel point. • Head outside town and fight the low-level boars and wasps in the starting fields. Use these encounters to practice Perfect Guard timing, basic attack combos, and using sword skills without worrying about dying.

Player Tip: Always activate teleport stones as soon as you enter a new area. They look like blue crystals on pedestals. If you die or need to return to town to restock and repair, you can fast travel back instantly instead of walking the whole way again.
