How to Unlock Dual Blades

The requirements to unlock Kirito's iconic Dual Blades in SAO: Hollow Realization, plus tips for the proficiency grind.

Unlock Requirements Dual Blades are not available at character creation. They are a locked weapon style that branches off from the One-Handed Sword skill tree. To unlock Dual Blades, you need: • One-Handed Sword proficiency -- You need to reach a sufficiently high proficiency level with 1HS. Proficiency is earned by fighting with 1HS equipped -- every normal attack and sword skill you land builds it. • 1HS skill tree progress -- You must unlock specific nodes along the 1HS tree before the Dual Blades branch becomes available. This means spending SP in the 1HS tree to reach that unlock node. • Story progression -- Some players report that story progress gates the unlock as well. Keep playing the main story as you build proficiency.

Player Tip: The exact proficiency number is not displayed clearly in-game, which is intentional. If you are consistently using 1HS and investing in its tree while progressing through the story, you will unlock Dual Blades naturally before you reach the later regions. Do not stress about hitting a specific number.

How to Grind Proficiency Efficiently • Keep One-Handed Sword equipped at ALL times, even when fighting weak enemies. You do not gain proficiency for weapons you are not holding. • Fight enemies near your level or slightly above. Fighting enemies far below your level gives minimal proficiency gains, while enemies at or above your level give much more. • Use sword skills frequently. Sword skills grant more proficiency per hit than normal attacks. • Chain skills together with SSC. Longer chains seem to grant bonus proficiency in addition to damage. • Use Switch in combat. Switch follow-ups count as skill uses and build proficiency. • Training dummies in town (if available) can be used to practice and build small amounts of proficiency without risk, though field combat is faster.

Are Dual Blades Worth It? Yes, absolutely. Dual Blades have: • The highest single-target DPS in the game. • Incredible multi-hit skills like Starburst Stream that melt boss HP bars. • Fast attack speed that chains beautifully into SSC combos. • A visually spectacular moveset that feels exactly as cool as you would expect. The downsides: • No shield and no defensive skills -- you rely entirely on Perfect Guard and dodging. • SP burns very quickly. You need to manage your SP gauge carefully or you will run dry mid-combo. • Skills can leave you locked in long animations if you mistime them. • High risk, high reward. You will take more damage learning Dual Blades than you did with 1HS.

Tips for Playing Dual Blades • Before unlocking, save up extra SP. The Dual Blades tree has several strong early nodes that you will want to grab immediately upon unlocking. • Practice SSC chaining before you switch. Dual Blades lives and dies by your ability to chain skills together. • Carry extra SP potions. You will burn through SP faster than with any other weapon. • Do not abandon Perfect Guard. Without a shield, Perfect Guard becomes even more critical for survival. • Pair with a party that can support you. Asuna's healing and Lisbeth's stuns give you the breathing room you need to unload Dual Blade skills.
