All Weapon Types Complete Breakdown

Category: Beginner's Guide | SAO Hollow Realization Guide

A detailed look at every weapon type in SAO: Hollow Realization -- strengths, weaknesses, skill styles, and which players should pick each.

One-Handed Sword (1HS) The jack-of-all-trades starter weapon. Moderate damage, moderate speed, solid defense options, and the deepest skill tree. This is the only weapon that branches into Dual Blades at high proficiency. 1HS has a balanced mix of single-target strikes, AoE sweeps, and defensive moves. Best for: Beginners, players who want flexibility, anyone planning to unlock Dual Blades eventually.

Rapier Asuna's weapon of choice. Extremely fast multi-thrust combos with the highest critical hit rate of any weapon. The downside is short range -- you need to be practically on top of enemies to land hits, and the physical damage per hit is low. Skilled rapier users dance around enemies landing crit after crit. Best for: Aggressive players who value speed and precision over raw power, players who enjoy high-crit builds.

Two-Handed Sword (2HS) Slow, heavy, and devastating. 2HS hits like a truck, builds stagger faster than any other weapon, and can launch enemies into the air for extended combos. The tradeoff is agonizingly long recovery animations after each swing. Miss a skill or get parried, and you will eat a full counterattack. Best for: Patient players who like reading enemy patterns, players who prefer heavy hits over fast combos.

Bow Sinon's ranged weapon. Bows let you fight from a safe distance, charge shots for increased damage, and target weak points for bonus damage. You can also apply status effects with special arrows. The main weakness is that you are vulnerable if enemies close the distance, and bow SP costs can be high for rapid fire. Best for: Players who prefer positioning and patience over melee combat, players who want a safe learning experience, boss fights with dangerous melee attacks.

Mace Lisbeth's signature weapon. Maces have the highest stun/stagger rate in the game, making them incredible for party play -- a mace user constantly creates Switch openings for allies. Mace skills also include super armor (you cannot be interrupted while swinging). Solo damage is lower than pure DPS weapons. Best for: Team players, tank-style players, players who like controlling the flow of battle with stuns.

Dagger Silica's weapon. The fastest attacks in the game paired with the best dodge-cancel capabilities. Daggers apply status ailments (poison, paralysis) effectively and have high mobility with quick dash attacks. The short range and low per-hit damage make them difficult to learn, but in skilled hands dagger users look untouchable. Best for: Hit-and-run players, players who value mobility and status effects, experienced players looking for a challenge.

Spear Spears have the longest melee reach and wide sweeping attacks that hit multiple enemies at once. They are excellent for crowd control and keeping groups of enemies at bay. Thrust attacks also target weak points well. Best for: Players who want melee range without getting too close, crowd control-focused players.

Dual Blades (Locked) Kirito's iconic dual-wielding style. Dual Blades are not a starting weapon -- you unlock them by reaching high proficiency with One-Handed Sword and progressing through the 1HS skill tree. Dual Blades have the highest DPS potential in the game with multi-hit skills like Starburst Stream, but burn through SP extremely quickly and offer no defensive options. Best for: Aggressive players who have mastered 1HS and want the ultimate damage weapon.

Player Tip: If you are unsure, pick One-Handed Sword. It gives you the most flexibility, teaches you the game without harsh penalties, and opens the door to Dual Blades later. You are not locked into your choice permanently.
